Opportunities with The Future of Dams
The New England Sustainability Consortium (NEST) has launched a stakeholder-engaged, solutions-focused, interdisciplinary research initiative focused on the future of dams. The initiative builds on NEST’s experience in advancing the theory and practice of sustainability science, and is supported in part by a $6 million, 4-year NSF EPSCoR grant. We have assembled an exceptional team of more than 20 faculty from six New England institutions (University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, University of Rhode Island, Keene State College, University of Southern Maine and Rhode Island School of Design) with expertise that spans and integrates the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, and design.
Using dams in New England as a model system, this NEST initiative will examine the economic, technological, ecological, social, and political trade-offs associated with different kinds of dam decisions (e.g., increasing power production at existing hydropower dams; installing new power production technology at non-power dams; maintaining existing but non-power dams for recreation or habitat; or removing dams to restore diadromous fisheries or address safety concerns). Our approach to problem solving is strongly dependent upon, and benefits from, the local knowledge and know-how of diverse stakeholders representing government, business and industry, and non-governmental organizations.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
The New England Sustainability Consortium is seeking to hire an undergraduate research assistant for Spring and Summer 2017 to support work on NEST’s Future of Dams project. The selected candidate will assist with ongoing research about communication, collaboration, and media in relation to decision making about dams in Maine. The primary responsibilities are to work with researchers to complete a database of news articles about dams and assist with stakeholder interviews, technical reports, and other outputs.
